Pro studio & live recording
GFF is an intimate and flexible venue hosting gatherings of up to fifty people producing select concerts, community events, parties, and quality recordings. The venue is also available as a private rental for any of these uses, or for anything you might dream up. Please scroll down for info and highlights. Let’s get creative.
The studio is designed to be as fast and self-contained as possible with 24 tracks of inputs that remain connected through a Behringer X32 mixer to Pro Tools. Bass, drums, guitars, piano, and more stay wired and ready. Some nice microphones and an Avalon 737 produce top quality vocals. Student and audition recordings are a specialty here. Live recording is also something we’re built for and do well, with or without an audience. If you are a new or developing artist looking to make professional recordings, get in touch. Diane is a true native Mainer, first grade teacher, with long-time deep roots in Freeport. You’ll also hear Diane as a musician, singing and playing flute. Tom, after years of touring as a musical artist while based in LA, NYC, & Nashville, has now become a forever-Mainer, married to and partnered with Diane. Read Tom’s full bio. They each have children but together they have just one – Ground Floor, Freeport and everything that comes with it.
Owners, Tom and Diane Acousti, lost their home to catastrophic water damage in 2016. In a leap of faith (or possible insanity), they purchased a commercial building where they could open a studio/venue on the ground floor while living on the floors above.
Locals may remember this particular building at 13 School St. as the former Freeport Salon. This three-story wooden building has been around since 1880 and hosted a lot of businesses, but nothing ever quite like GFF. It would take a lot of changes to the building and re-qualifying it for this kind of mixed use.
The following year was filled with the complexities of opening a business, doing structural repairs and upgrades on the building, followed by months of making the Ground Floor signs, by themselves, that are now a fixture in Freeport. Then came what was likely the longest “soft opening” in Freeport commercial history as GFF hosted small private parties, and test concerts. It took nearly a year of this before becoming fully licensed and legal. GRAND OPENING celebration included concerts, kids shows, workshops and more… 10 events in 10 days in July 2019. Covid put a stop to public events for 2 years, but as of this writing, GFF is again open for recording services, music production, public events, and rentals.
