Beginning of Time

“Let love
let the people
lead”

Song Lyric

In the beginning of time
In the beginning of time, of time
The beginning of time

No more metaphor please
Let’s cut to the quick
Get down on your knees
Well, you might get yours but I will get mine
We will do it like they did in the beginning of time
The beginning of time
Beginning of time, of time
The beginning of time

So climb down from the passenger seat
And walk your own way
Feel the ground beneath your feet
Light a gasoline fire to the highway sign
We can do it like they did in the beginning of time

The beginning of time
Beginning of time, of time
Beginning of time

You can steal a love poem
You can marry her in your fine home
You can lock the doors
All these walls are yours
But we will not be taken in
By rules you write so paper thin
Excuses for your greed
Now it’s time to let the people lead

And let love let the people lead
Let love let the people lead
Let love
You gotta let the people lead
Gotta let the people

So bring me the hypocrite’s head
Starve your ego feed your people instead
It’ll be tough to play the politician when you’re dead
You can cast your vote; You can stand in line
I will do it like they did in the beginning of time

The beginning of time
In the beginning of time, of time
Beginning of time

Let love, let love, let love

And let love
Let the people lead

About the Song

This song’s origin and timing are cloudy. Yes, it was THAT long ago. I remember playing it solo in clubs, then touring with Jim Fortier at some colleges, and a lot with the Happy Bus trio. It was never properly recorded, except in a video shoot at Carnegie Mellon University circa 1993, and only a short clip of this song made the final cut.

As I read the lyrics now, it sounds like there may have been something to be pissed about at that time, like an illegal war… or maybe the S&L swindle… or Iran/Contra… or ? Pick whichever of those you wish and let’s say the song’s about that. Whatever the history, this song is still about RIGT NOW more than ever. Unfortunately, same shit, different decade.

We chose this as the first DNR release because of the revolutionary tone, and because it’s been around for sooooooo long without being properly recorded. As the 2020 election drew closer this made even more sense, until things got so disgusting that it didn’t make any sense. Because of the brewing violence, we stalled the release until election day. Little did we know, the violence would continue.  Beginning of Time is about a peaceful revolution and a shift to true servant leadership. It’s about considering, then rejecting violence. We’re hoping that’s evident enough to any conscious listener.

About the Recording

I had just been learning to play a drum kit for the first time ever when the pandemic hit, which suddenly quadrupled my practice time. Within a few months I was playing mostly in time, and dropping sticks only every other song. It didn’t look like we could afford a pro drummer or have ANY players in the venue until the pandemic subsided.  And that’s how I became a drummer… at least on this song.

The first thing to record was the acoustic guitar.    After that, a scratch vocal, followed by piano, drums, a borrowed bass, and the usual top secret stuff.  It’s the only 100% solo fully-produced recording I’ve done.  Writing, producing, mixing, playing? – I don’t recommend it.  (See movie: The Shining)

This song is also the first release recorded 100% in Freeport.  Beginning of Time might be the first of these self contained productions, but it won’t be the last.  The GFF studio has been optimized for exactly this kind of Do It Your SOLO-Self workflow.
